Friends versus Movers: The big day

I was recently asked to help a friend move.

Now, I remember when we all used to move around the city almost annually. Our friends were all interested in trying new things and living spaces were a big part of that. But things started to settle down and moving became less frequent over the past few years. Some of us have purchased homes while others have found great deals on our apartments and aren’t willing to give them up.

But alas, the time comes when you need to move and this particular friend decided not to go with movers. Instead, he enlisted the help of a modest ten guys who would be lifting boxes, packing up the rental truck and of course, trying our hardest not to scratch any of the furniture (no promises were made).

When we showed up that Saturday morning, there was vitamin waters, pizzas, snacks, and a few cold drinks after we finished. And I started thinking.  How much did this cost?

Let’s say you could get movers for around $250-$300. Well, after renting a truck, plus buying food and snacks for ten people, I think it may cost more than hiring movers to do all the hard work for you.

Now I didn’t do the math, but I’d like to ask you what your preference is when moving. Do you hire movers or do you enlist your friends?

Comment below and let’s find out what the more popular option is at the i-Say panel!

I live in Canada and if you can get a complete move done for $800 – $1000, you’re doing well. But I’d pay it anyway – done in 3-4 hours.

Je trouve cela très bien tout ce que vous faite!

  3. Karen says:

It depends on how far I’m moving. A few blocks, I’ll call my friends with pick up trucks. Across town, or out of town, it’s movers all the way!

  4. Lisa says:

Always movers, no matter the cost. We’re not as young as we used to be & my pals don’t rally around quite the same anymore. I do miss the sharing of pizza & beer for afters though!

  5. Mary says:

I love helping friends move. Don’t need to hire anyone as long as we have a few trucks or vans available.

  6. Caryne says:

Funny, I just had a moving company come today. They quoted us $5000 to move us from Maryland to Florida. I really want use movers; is this expensive?

The last time I moved was 6 years ago, with the help of a few friends and some commercial help. I do not intend to move again soon.

I will use a rental truck with help from family & friends. We’ve used pros several times, and EVERY TIME they have 1) damaged or destroyed something or 2) delivered our possession to someone else who was unloaded before we were. Renting our own truck means everything on the truck is ours, and our friends are more careful than the movers.

i have enough friends and family that we all help each other out when needed, you might have a mis hap once in a while, but the time spent together is well worth it! what goes around comes around…or is it the other way around? lol

All sounds so “friends” like – I thought that I had great life long friends until my best friend told me he would help me move & then made all sorts of excuses to get out of it? I could not bare to listen to the web of lies he created. Weird ahe! Why cant people just be honest. It hurt me so much. Be thankful that you all have just great firends. I thought that was only in the movies? or on TV? He still cant talk to me? 1 year later, Wow, great guy – Sand

I have wonderful friends & have had to move several x’s in my married days. Our chruch was always there for us. We have always been there for them! For the right home I would move tomorrow…wheel chair assessable.

  11. Beverly Farnsworth says:

I love our church we moved so many times for the first several years of our marriage and we always had all the help we needed. I would move tomorrow if I could find an affordable wheel chair assessable!

  12. Beverly Farnsworth says:

I love our church! We moved 20 times the first years of our marriage and we always had all the help we needed. We have always been here for them also. I would move tomorrow if there was a wheel chair assessable home affortable.

We have a wounderful church and they have always been there for us when we had to move. We will be there for them also. I would move tomorrow if I could find an affortable wheel chair assessable home.

We helped a friend of the family move just today! About 230–240 miles.

  15. Ryan says:

$250-300 is a very low and seemingly unrealistic estimate for movers. I’d get friends and family to help anyday, especially after recent extortion type behaviour by certain moving companies here in Canada where customers couldn’t get their belongings back until they paid 3-4 times the agreed on price.

Using Box n Go storage to ship about 15,000 lbs. from California to Maryland. Have already shipped 7,000 lbs. Everything came through fine. They deliver pods, you pack, they pick up. The pods are on a truck and on their way within 24 hours. No one else touches your stuff. Total cost for 15,000 lbs is much less than moving company quote for 7,500 lbs.

we moved from a trailer in a nudist park to a Senior’s Apartment four years ago. Because there was no rush, we sold stuff to get the cash for gas etc. The chap, with the Pick-up truck, who moved us did three or four trips and got a friend to help on the last run. Was I supposed to provide treats?

  20. barry says:

we have not moved in fourty years ,I guess we have settled in, but the last time we did move we used movers.

  21. Ronnie says:

About 20 years ago we had friends and familyl help move us. Now there would be no way in the world that I could move without calling movers. I have too much stuff, and I would never be able to find anyone to help me move again.

  22. Cathy says:

I have moved both ways and had issues either way. Friends who don”t show so you have only 2-3 people to load and unload, or friends who show up for an hour and have to go. On the other hand, I had a moving company move me and they were 6 hours late (with another load in back of moving van to deliver), they were paid to unpack and set up (beds, kitchen table, etc) but said they had no time to unpack and no tools to set up???? It took me 6 months to get the money I paid for this back.
